This review of the Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust Umbagog cigar was done lakeside on a beautiful September day at Fox Brook Park in Brookfield, Wisconsin. It seemed like a good location to do a review of the Umbagog cigar, which is named in honor of the favorite getaway spot of Steve Saka, the founder of Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust.
I like a good marketing story, especially when the cigar itself actually fits the story, and this cigar matches the background story perfectly. It’s got a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper (a very thick and sturdy wrapper) and a robust, sturdy San Andres binder. Those combine to make about as rugged and outdoorsy a cigar as can be made. The filler is a proprietary blend of excellent-burning tobacco, so this cigar will hold up for taking it camping, fishing, golfing or just mowing your lawn.
I must confess, I smoked two of these prior to the one I smoked for this review. I was extremely impressed by the construction, draw and razor-sharp burn line on the first two. The one I smoked in the video review burned very nicely but had a bit of canoeing that did not require a re-light. Very high grades for construction on all three.
What about taste? If you’re familiar with Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust you may be expecting a nuanced flavor profile to appeal to a sophisticated palate. Not true with the Umbagog! It is straightforward and simple, just like the lake it is named for. Earth flavor abounds, with a bit of oak, supplemented by a nice black coffee taste. Everything is balanced with just the right amount of black pepper. And it doesn’t change from start to finish.
Overall impression, given the price point (about US$8 in bundle of ten), the sturdiness and reliable burn, this is a great cigar for outdoor activities. But I wouldn’t necessarily limit it to that. All three that I have smoked have provided an excellent smoking experience. I’d rate Umbagog a solid 9.0/10, a very good cigar. Body is a 6.0/10 so if you’re looking for a cigar that’s well balanced but bold enough to be interesting, this is a cigar you may like.
