Cigar Box Opening – Dakine Sampler Box

Cigar Box Opening – Dakine Cigar Sampler
Unique cigars featuring Hawaiian-grown tobacco

I’m always on the lookout for new and different things in the cigar world, and I came across a new line of cigars that bills itself as the only cigars to use Hawaiian tobacco! This is a sampler box containing one each (Toro size) of the 8-cigar line. Each cigar is named for one of the eight Hawaiian islands, and each cigar is designed to express the personality of that particular island.

The name “Dakine” is actually a slang Hawaiian term. Translated loosely, it means “that kind,” but the many uses of it involve a deep dive into the Hawaiian dialect. In the video, I walk through each of the cigars:

The Gathering Place (Oahu, where Honolulu is located) – This cigar features a Habano wrapper from Ecuador over a Nicaraguan Binder and Hawaiian-grown and Nicaraguan-grown filler.

The Valley Isle (Maui) – A Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, Ecuadoran binder and Hawaiian/Nicaraguan filler.

The Forbidden Isle (Niihau) – A Cameroon wrapper, with Nicaraguan binder/filler and Hawaiian filler.

The Big Island (Hawaii) – This cigar has a Pennsylvanian Broadleaf wrapper wit Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan/Hawaiian filler.

The Friendly Isle (Molokai) – One of two milder cigars in the mix, this is an Ecuadoran Connecticut Shade wrapper with Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan/Hawaiian filler.

The Garden Isle (Kauai) – – A Mexican San Andres wrapper, Ecuadorian binder, and Nicaraguan/Hawaiian filler.

Target Isle (Kahoolawe) – This features an Ecuadoran Habano wrapper, and is billed as the boldest cigar of the eight, with Ecuadorian binder, and Nicaraguan/Hawaiian filler.

Lana’I (Lana’i) – This is the sixth largest island of the eight islands. It’s known for two things – Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle, owns 98% of the property on Lana’i but the island is also home to the “Lana’I Cat Sanctuary,” a mostly-outdoor facility that is the home to over 600 cats and a major tourist attraction to the small island. The cigar features a Candela wrapper that is grown on the Plascencia farm in Honduras, and Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan/Hawaiian filler.

A major consideration in buying this box – it is sold exclusively through Best Cigar Prices. At the time I bought it, the company was doing an introductory promotion at $59.95 for the sampler box. I believe the normal selling price is around $80.
