I wasn’t planning to review this cigar – it flies under the radar in terms of brand awareness, being one of several versions of the La Aroma De Cuba line. But after a few puffs, I changed my mind – because this is one of the best cigars I smoked in quite a while.
You may be familiar with La Aroma De Cuba, a line made by My Father Cigars. The original version and the Mi Amor tend to get all the attention and both are certainly worthy. The only reason I smoked the Edicion Especial is because it came in a small sampler box I bought almost a year ago.
It’s late October, and it was too cold and snowy to be outdoors – so garage smoking time! Since it was a lousy weather day, I didn’t want to smoke anything “A List” – and I certainly didn’t plan to review it.
Looks-wise, the brown shade is much lighter than a lot of photos I’ve seen online. Also, it isn’t shiny – the Ecuadoran Sumatra wrapper is a coffee-with-cream tannish color and while it’s smooth, it is not the least bit oily. A very nice-looking cigar, no seams, or bumpy veins.
The fun started immediately after a nice, easy light. I was blown away by two things: (1) The draw was perhaps the easiest, loosest draw I have ever smoked, and (2) Having not researched this cigar before lighting, the smooth, sweet Sumatra-seed taste was an amazing and pleasant surprise.
The best way to describe the body and flavor of this cigar is this: Imagine if the E.P. Carrillo Allegiance and My Father Flor de las Antillas had a love child. The La Aroma De Cuba Edicion Especial would be it. The Ecuadorian Sumatra seed on the La Aroma is very much similar to the Allegiance, sweet and wonderful. But the My Father influence pushes the overall body up from medium to medium-full and gives it an unmistakable My Father uniqueness.
I’d say 7.0/10 for body/strength, not quite medium-full.
Construction on this stick was flawless – I find cold weather challenges an inferior cigar but burn on this one was near-perfect and no issues with unraveling or anything else.
But it was the draw and flavor that sent this cigar zooming up in smoking experience – I’m going with a 9.0/10 – that is an excellent cigar. Of the cigars I’ve smoked in the past year, I’d say there were no more than 5 or 6 that led me to think, “I need to buy more of these ASAP!” This was one of them.
The La Aroma De Cuba Edicion Especial No. 6 retails for about US$9.50. This cigar is worth it. Not many deals to be had, this stick is too far under the radar to be a sale magnet.
