Cigar Review – Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua

Review of the Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua

Overall impression, the Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua is a great cigar that tends to be overlooked.

Specifications:
Size: #2 Torpedo 6-1/8 inches x 52 gauge
Origin: Nicaragua Puro
Source: Box purchase

Since I did a box opening of this cigar in June, I’ve had a chance to smoke seven or eight of these already. I figured I better do a review before they are all gone!

The Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua cigar is a joint Ataldis/Montecristo (Master blender Rafael Nodal) and A.J. Fernandez blend, but all of the tobacco comes from A.J. farms and it is made at his San Lotano factory in Nicaragua.

The Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua was named the #2 cigar for 2021 by Cigar Aficionado.

Having smoked a pretty large sample size of this cigar, in my opinion the Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua is one of a handful of cigars that I would describe as perfect – right up there with the Padron 1926 and Padron 1964. That is a bold statement, I understand, particularly for a U.S. market (as opposed to a Cuban) Montecristo cigar.

One caveat – A.J. Fernandez is known for making strong, bold cigars and the Montecristo 1935 is no exception. Although it’s well balanced, it is still a powerhouse and if you don’t like strong cigars then this one may not be for you.

Tasting notes and observations:
Draw, burn , construction, appearance, flavor, balance…every aspect of this cigar is excellent. Price is an issue, unfortunately list price is up there with the Padron 1926 at about US$20 per stick, but the difference is that, if you keep your eyes open, there are price promotions where you can get it for under US$10 a stick (box quantity of 10).

Ratings: Boldness = 9.0/10 Experience = 10.0/10 – this is as close to a perfect cigar as I have ever had.
