This review is for the Plasencia Alma Fuerte Sixto ii Hexagono. The Alma Fuerte comes in four vitolas, but the Hexagono is a very unique shape, box pressed into a hexagon. Even the band is box pressed, onto the cigar’s unique angles.
The Plasencia family is an interesting story – like most cigar giants, they started in Cuba, but fled when the Castro regime took over and eventually settled in Nicaragua. In the Sandinista turmoil, they fled Nicaragua and set up growing farms in Honduras. After the dust settled in Nicaragua they returned but kept the Honduras operation as well. That puts them in a unique position as one of the major growers in both countries. About 50 years ago, the family expanded from just growing and selling tobacco to a full-service third-party cigar maker – from tobacco to blending to production, they still manufacture cigars for thirty companies including names like Padilla, new world Montecristo and Rocky Patel. In 2017 the company took another step forward and began producing their own brand of cigars.
The Alma Fuerte was one of their early efforts and still one of the most popular of their various cigar brands. If you are looking for a comparison point for the Alma Fuerte is very similar to the Padron 1964, a little more full-bodied but with a similar smooth flavor profile. The Alma Fuerte tobacco is aged 10 years, which very few other companies other than Padron do on a regular basis.
Burn, draw and other construction was perfect. The 60-ring gauge size is not my first choice, but it handled like a champ. This was an excellent smoking experience. This is a full bodied cigar, although the smoothness of the aged tobacco rounds off the sharp taste edges. It seemed to pick up strength as I progressed through the second third, and the last third was definitely a 9/10 in terms of boldness.
Overall smoking experience for the Plasencia Alma Fuerte is a 9.5/10. This is truly one an outstanding cigars and should be in the discussion when Padron 1964 or 1926 are mentioned. At about US$21 per stick, this is not an every day cigar, but for special occasions it will not disappoint.
