Padron Throwdown! Padron 1926 vs Padron 1964

Cigar smokers often ask, which is the better choice – Padron 1964 or Padron 1926. Jim does a deep dive of both the Padron 1964 and Padron 1926, comparing everything – cost, appearance, taste, boldness, construction, and overall smoking pleasure. Here is a summary of the differences between the Padron 1926 and Padron 1964 cigars:

Cost: The Padron 1964 is about 15% less cost than the Padron 1926, in US dollars that works out to nearly $3 per cigar – if you’re buying a box, that adds up to over a $100 difference in cost.

Tobacco: Both feature high quality tobacco from Padron farms (Padron Cigars is rather secretive about the exact blend or source of tobacco), but the Padron 1926 tobacco is aged 5-10 years versus about 4 years of aging for the Padron 1964 cigar tobacco. Since all Padron cigar tobacco farms are in Nicaragua, both are considered puros.

Construction: Both are box pressed, but the Padron 1926 has a much smoother appearance, while the Padron 1964 wrapper is relatively rustic with more noticeable bumps.

Ratings: I averaged the most recent 10 ratings from Cigar Aficionado ratings and found a virtual tie – the Padron 1926 averaged a Cigar Aficionado rating of 94.1 (out of 100) while the Padron 1964 averaged a rating of 93.7 in Cigar Aficionado. Those are excellent ratings, few cigars are rated over 93 points.
