Ah, the forbidden fruit of Cuban cigars!
If you’re a cigar smoker in the US, you know it’s difficult to impossible, and pretty darn expensive to get Cuban cigars. So your buddy is visiting Mexico next week and offers to bring you back a box – what’s the legal situation on that? How about those mail order places that will ship you Cubans from Switzerland – can you get in legal trouble for buying those?
This video answers those and other questions, and also gives an interesting look at the history that brought the Cuban cigar situation we have today. There is a lot of misunderstanding about the legal aspects of Cuban cigars in the US. If you’d like to do some research on your own, be careful searching online for answers, any article prior to November 2020 will likely have incorrect information. The bottom line is, it is illegal under any circumstance to bring Cuban cigars into the US, from any country. In reality, millions of Cuban cigars (some say tens of millions!) enter the US each year. Even with pretty clear cut laws, the penalties are spottily enforced – confiscation is likely the most serious outcome, but larger quantities can result in up to a $50,000 fine and/or imprisonment.
